Kentuckiana Motorsports Presented by Lucas Oil

It is Phoenix this weekend in the NASCAR Cup Series. It recent years, Kevin Harvick has dominated, taking the checkered flag more than a half-dozen times. However, it is Joey Logano who has the best average finish: 4th place. After getting a race DNF at Vegas, expect Joey to come back strong at Phoenix. Of course, the fan favorite will be Harvick, the 2014 Cup Champion. He is set to retire from full-time racing after this season. It will be fun to watch.

At Vegas William Byron won the Cup Event, Austin Hill in Xfinity, and Kyle Busch in the Craftsman Trucks. It is Kyle's 63rd truck series win (He holds a commanding Xfinity record with 104). Second place all-time in trucks is Ron Hornaday Jr. with 51. There is no doubt Kyle Busch will go down as the greatest overall racer in NASCAR history, at least with wins. There will be plenty of time for debate on his career later. But note, if he wins at least 3 Cup races this season, and one Xfinity race( He plans on racing 5 this season), and another dozen Cup racers before he retires, it will be hard to not say Kyle is the greatest ever. In todays NASCAR, the days of winning 7-8 races per season is over. There is too much parity. Enjoy Kyle while you can. There is no one coming up who had his brashness and skill.

A shout out to Louisville's Ben Rhodes. He finished 3rd at Vegas in the NASCAR Truck Series. At Daytona he was 11th. Ben needs top 5 and top 10 finishes early-- for the playoff run in the fall. We predict Ben will win not only once, but twice this season. He's got swagger. He's matured. Now it is up to his team, ThorSport Racing. They've been around since 1996. This season ThorSport has 4 drivers competing. The next truck race is March 18 in Atlanta.

Will Tony Stewart get his first win this weekend? No, Smoke isn't behind the wheel of a Cup car again. The NASCAR and NHRA team owner is running full-time in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series for McPhillips Racing. Stewart will be in a Top Alcohol Dragster. He owns the NHRA Top Fuel team his wife, Leah Pruitt runs. She is a 12-time NHRA. The NHRA begins the season this weekend in Gainesville, Florida. Be sure to check out FOX Sports for Fox Sports 1 for all the NHRA action in 2023. And yes, you will see plenty of Lucas Oil signs!

The Sportsdrome Speedway has unveiled its scheduled for the new racing season. The small flat track just outside of Louisville off Interstate 65 has been around for more than 75-years. They do so much for local racing. The first event of the 2023 schedule kicks off with a doubleheader- Friday March 24th and Saturday March 25th! We'll be talking with longtime track operator and owner Mike Gibson in the weeks ahead on what is perhaps the strongest Sportsdrome Speedway schedule in the past decade.

The Salem Speedway, another local historic track, doesn't start action until mid-April. We'll share more about Salem and other Kentuckiana stock car tracks in April. If you like local drag racing, weather permitting, the Ohio Valley Dragway is set to begin its season on April 7. The Dixie Highway drag strip is in West Point, Kentucky about 25 minutes from downtown Louisville.
